POWERED BY DANCE
WHY DO WE COMPETE?
You may be wondering what the point of competition is and why we choose to do it. Why don’t we just perform? Competitions provide an organized performance opportunity, with feedback from professional judges from around the US. It is an opportunity for our dancers to see what other dancers around the area are learning and with a healthy sense of competition, motivate our dancers to be better, work harder and learn more. If we go into it with the right attitude, an attitude of bettering ourselves with each performance and growing as artists, it can be a great, beneficial, and learning experience for your dancer each time.
We firmly believe in the work ethic and teamwork and drive that competition develops in our dancers and we believe that we are teaching them far more than the art of dance through our program.

COMPETITION DAY
For many teams, competition day can be the most exciting day of the year. This is the day when all the hard work of memorizing Choreography, cleaning motions, and drilling technique comes together. Until the awards ceremony is finished, most coaches are in a constant state of stress. For the dancers, though, it is vital that morale is very high and that they feel confident, excited, and ready to compete.
The team will enter together and sit together as a team. A parent must come over to the side of the dancers in order for your child to be released to eat lunch or dress into their next costume (if needed). THERE IS NO CHANGING in the gym on the bleachers AND NO running around.
1. Team members are required to be at all performances/competitions and arrive on specified call-time.
2. Fingernails must be trimmed to the appropriate "safe" length prior to each performance/competition. Acrylic nails must be nude in color and not distracting for the older dancers.
3. Dancers may be pulled from performance/competition for any of the following reasons:
-
lack of knowledge of routine
-
lack of ability to perform at required skill level for said routine
-
attitude not promoting teamwork, sportsmanship
-
disregard for constitution and the guidelines governing this organization.
4. An absence within five days prior to a performance or a competition may cause the dancer to lose her/his spot in the routine.
EVERYONE'S ROLE DURING COMPETITION WEEKENDS
Dancers should be focused on their performance. They should be respectful to their teammates, coaches, parents and everyone from the competition and others throughout the day- despite frustration, nerves, etc. They are in charge of their own bag, costumes, shoes, and make-up, except the younger teams.
Coaches will be as available as possible to help dancers with their dance, with their nerves and with anything else going on. We have many dancers to support throughout the day and many responsibilities to contend with.
Dance Captains should be able to practice with their team in the warm up area if coach is not available.

WHY DO WE HAVE A CALL TIME?

You may be wondering why we ask all team members to arrive at an early call time. There are several reasons for this.
In the morning, there are many tasks that need to be completed before the competition begins. For instance, coaches need time to distribute and apply team wristbands to all dancers. Even though each routine has a scheduled performance time, these times can change throughout the day, and we need to stay flexible.

Additionally, the coaches must ensure all dancers are in their costumes, with their hair and makeup properly done. There may also be last-minute changes, such as adjusting formations if a dancer is absent due to illness or another issue. For these reasons, it is essential for everyone to arrive on time. During the preparations, coaches cannot leave the team to address tardiness outside the designated area. We kindly ask that all parents make every effort to ensure dancers arrive promptly at each competition.
WHY DANCERS MUST STAY FOR AWARDS AT COMPETITIONS

-
Team Spirit and Support: Staying for the awards ceremony shows support for teammates and strengthens team spirit. It's important for dancers to cheer on their fellow team members and celebrate not just their own achievements, but also those of other teams.
-
Recognition and Motivation: Receiving awards in person is an exciting and rewarding experience. It recognizes the hard work, dedication, and talent of each dancer. Being part of this moment can be incredibly motivating, fueling future passion and commitment to dance.
-
Professionalism and Courtesy: Attending the entire competition, including the awards ceremony, demonstrates professionalism and respect for the event organizers, judges, and other competitors. It's a way to show gratitude for the experience and honor everyone involved.
-
Learning Experience: The awards ceremony offers an opportunity to learn from other teams’ performances and outcomes. Dancers can gain valuable insights, whether through watching different styles or seeing how their peers handle success and challenges.
-
Team Representation: As representatives of Powered By Dance, it's important for dancers to remain present and visible during the awards ceremony. This reflects positively on the team and reinforces our commitment to being an active, supportive member of the dance community.
-
Building Resilience: Regardless of the outcome, attending the awards ceremony helps build resilience and sportsmanship. It teaches dancers to handle both triumphs and disappointments with grace and maturity, while also supporting their peers in every circumstance.
-
Team Photos: Coaches love to capture memories by taking photos of the dancers with their trophies. These images celebrate the team's hard work and success and become treasured keepsakes for everyone involved.
If you must leave due to an emergency, please inform the coaches. By staying for the awards ceremony, dancers not only contribute to the team’s morale but also gain a well-rounded experience from the competition.
